Rommelo Yu - Ballwall + 6 Rooms On View

In his ongoing project nitwittliwitt, Rommelo Yu develops a series of work, which grows out of the work of the American minimalists and concept artist Sol LeWitt.

Lewitt’s work, often characterized by a purity of intention, an exactness of framing, transverses to a place of fantasy and dislocation. Traces of history, of character, and alternate intentions fill the new body, breaking the old from its confines of purity. LeWitt becomes a Trojan horse for Yu‘s work by injecting a post-colonial discourse into his aesthetic discourse: Conceptual, visceral Art, ahistorical Art meets the body, its personal histories and its subjectivity making it visual in this project.

For the Ballwall series, the artist chose LeWitts wall drawings as the object of exploitation and transfers various "outside" influences, thus contaminating his intentions and thereby his work. Yu offers an alternative form of universalism, one whose principles are guided not by exclusion but one whose essence relies on inclusion (of touch, memory, histories).

This exhibition project attempts to document Yu’s process; from source material to alternate versions, then to the new materials including the production methods and the final work.
