Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, liebe Freunde und KollegInnen,
SURVIVAL ist nach CUT, HUNGER und ESCAPE das Thema des Internationalen Performance Art Festivals, welches vom 29. August bis zum 6. September 2014 stattfindet und zu dem wir Sie hiermit herzlichst einladen!
Zum vierten Mal bietet das Festival, eine Koproduktion von Open Space Berlin und den BLO-Ateliers, eine Plattform für über 60 Berliner und internationale KünstlerInnen und das was Performance Art ausmacht: spontane Kreativität, Konfrontation, Experimente, kurz: KünstlerInnen in Echtzeit. In seiner einzigartigen Kombination aus Workshops, dem Performance Labor und den Interventionen im
öffentlichen Raum präsentiert das Festival einen Querschnitt der derzeitigen Positionen von KünstlerInnen, aus Berlin, Asien, Europa, Nord- und Südamerika und ihrer enormen Diversität. Radikale PerformerInnen, politische Aktionen, poetische, mystische und symbolistische Performances geben einen kontrastreichen Einblick in das nomadische Wesen zeitgenössischer Performancepraxis.
Warum SURVIVAL?
Wie Überleben – als KünstlerInnen, als Mensch an sich, kulturelle Institution, auf der Flucht, nach Naturkatastrophen, im Krieg, mit der überwältigenden Informations- und Datenflut, in der gläsernen Welt? Eine der existenziellen Fragen die wir uns dieser Tage stellen. In diesem historischen Moment in dem Ängste über unsere Existenz, das Misstrauen gegenüber politischen und sozialen Strukturen und die Sorgen über unsere Umwelt zunehmen, gibt es trotz allem, oder gerade dadurch bedingt, mehr und mehr Bestätigungen für ein grundsätzliches kreatives innovatives Vorstellungsvermögen des Menschen. Neue Ideen werden formuliert, in Eigeninitiative realisiert und alternative Formen des Überlebens entwickelt. Das Thema fungiert als Blaupause und Inspirationsquelle für die KünstlerInnen, welche
ihre Arbeiten auf dem Festival zeigen.
SURVIVAL ist 2014 ein Thema, welches die BLO-Ateliers direktbetrifft. In diesem Jahr steht die Ateliergemeinschaft in Lichtenberg inmitten komplizierter Verhandlungen zur Verlängerung des Mietvertrags mit der Deutschen Bahn AG. Gleichzeitig markiert 2014 auch das zehnjährige Bestehen der BLO-Ateliers auf dem Gelände, welches an sich schon Anlass genug ist das Überleben zu zelebrieren.

SURVIVAL – after CUT, HUNGER, and ESCAPE – is the theme of the International Performance Art Festival, which is taking place this year from August 29 to September 6, 2014 and to which we with this mail would like to invite you!
For the fourth time, the festival, a co-production of Open Space Berlin and the BLO-Ateliers, provides a platform for over 60 Berlin and international artists and for what constitutes performance art: spontaneous creativity, confrontation, experiments, in short: artists in real time. With its unique combination of workshops, the Performance Lab, and interventions in the public space, the festival presents a cross-section of the current positions of artists from Berlin, Asia, Europe, and North and South America, and their enormous diversity. Radical performers, political actions, and poetic, mystical, and symbolic performances provide richly contrasting insights into the nomadic nature of contemporary performance practice.

Why SURVIVAL?
How to survive – as an artist, as a cultural institution, while fleeing persecution, after natural catastrophes, in war, while confronted with the flood of data and information, in the transparent world . . . – is one of the biggest questions that we face today. At this historic moment, when there are growing fears about our continuing existence, a mistrust of political structures and social networks, and concerns about our environment, there are nonetheless, or perhaps specifically as a result, also more and more confirmations of the power of people’s innovative creativity. New ideas are formulated, realized through personal initiative, and alternative forms of survival are developed. The theme this year once again serves as a blueprint and source of inspiration for the artist presenting their works during the festival.

In 2014, SURVIVAL is also a theme that directly impacts the BLO-Ateliers. This year, the studio community in Lichtenberg is caught up in complicated negotiations with the Deutsche Bahn AG regarding extending the lease. At the same time, 2014 also marks the 10-year anniversary of BLO-Ateliers on the site, which is already in itself reason enough to celebrate its survival.
